Asphalt Shingles – What are they:

  • Three-tab: A common type of asphalt shingle is called a three-tab. These single layer shingles offer a uniform, flat appearance, and are made of a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt. Each piece is cut into three equal sections or tabs—hence its name. This used to be the most economical roofing choice but is not recommended anymore due to their performance issues.
  • Architectural: Architectural shingles are made of multiple layers of asphalt-coated fiberglass that are laminated together. They’re also cut differently from the three-tab option, giving the shingle a variation in style and a more three-dimensional look.
  • Designer: These shingles are made just like other asphalt shingles, but they come in different colors and are designed to mimic the look of cedar, slate, or wood shake shingles.

Fibreglass shingles have a Class A fire rating and use approximately 40% less asphalt than the organic ones, therefore are lighter and are less harmful to the environment.

Although it is important to pay attention to your roof and look for signs that it needs to be replaced, fibreglass shingles will lay flatter longer (they wont curl up like the older ‘3-tab’ shingle). The best thing to do is to have a certified roofer come perform an inspection to let you know what maintenance, if any, is needed to help extend the life of your roof.

Asphalt Shingles – the manufacturers:

At the end of the day, HOW your roofing materials are installed usually means more than WHICH brand you use. Proper installation is key!

We have installed many brands of shingles over the years (GAF, IKO, CertainTeed, BP, Owens Corning, etc.) but we primarily lead with GAF shingles. They really have stood the test of time and their shingle quality testing is bar-none. They have created some of the best roofing products for the job. This manufacturer has high standards for quality in roofing and we have worked hard to meet all requirements and are proud to hold the Master Elite status with GAF. Learn more about the GAF Master Elite designation and why it should be important for you to have a contractor who holds this designation.
